Thanks for these thoughts about sticking to it! I had initial very good results, even within a week. Then, life got ahead of me, and I was using it, but staying up late to finish work, and not sleeping long enough. I even stayed up all night 2 nights in a row - the work HAD to get finished, but I was still not able to do it in a methodical, some-every-day fashion.

In short, it caught up with me, and I had a TIA in the middle of the summer. I got off light! No residual effects except lingering exhaustion. Now I'm making my way back, and beginning to feel better. The CPAP is crucial to my recovery.

The original machine I had worked wonderfully well, but it turned out that it did not have the slot and card so the doctor could monitor my usage and results. So the company that leases out the machines came and gave me another model (with card, but a used one with yucky stuff in the reservoir) and the new machine has been one problem after another: leaky masks, noises as I breathe, and places on my face that get gradually sorer from the pressure of the mask.

The company has been cooperative about trying different masks, but nothing seems easy and right the way the first model was - even the gel mask - and they don't seem to keep very careful records or remember my size and so forth. But the only way I can keep the leaks from appearing is to sleep stock-still. If I even move my head, the leaks start, and I wake up stiff and sore from holding the same position.

I wonder, do leaks lessen the good effects of the machine, or only blow chilly air annoyingly into one's eyes and down one's arms?

I don't know what model CPAP I have, and don't know the difference between BiPAP and AutoPAP, or what else is available that might be helpful to me.

It's an odd mix of success and vexations, but clearly the thing to do is hang in until I hit the winning combination.
