I recently tried switching machine brands and experienced the same problem with the pitch of the noise changing all the time. I could not sleep with my Respironics machine because of this. My old brand was a Fisher & Paykel. Health practitioners looked at me like I was crazy, but I fought my insurance and got a new Fisher & Paykel HC233. It must be the quietest machine out there and most importantly there is no "change in the pitch". However I am not sure if they have a machine that will drop the pressure, I do not seem to require this. I am at 8cm. I hope this helps.
