Could I have sleep apnea?

Trying to figure this out, because I've felt like crap all my life (tiredness in the bones, fog in the brain), no matter how many hours of sleep I've gotten.

Anyway, just a while back, I pieced everything together and realized that every couple of months, I have a dream in which I stop breathing, and then I wake up gasping for air. Also, as I mentioned above, no matter how much I sleep, I'm still tired.

I'm not overweight, but I have a suspicion that any breathing problems I might have when I sleep are originating in my nose--to elaborate, my nose constantly feels stuffed (whether or not I have a cold), and I sleep w/ my mouth closed, so I'm thinking that may be an issue.

I'm in the process of being referred for a sleep study, but my PCP (the referrer) didn't seem to think sleep apnea was too likely, solely because I'm not overweight. Wondering if anyone here could support or refute what he said.
