Posted by SomeDudeinCali on January 30, 2009 at 16:28:11:For the first time in my life, I will be seeing a dentist who specializes in sleep apnea. I'm 27, not overweight, and was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea a couple years ago. I can't stand the CPAP and I am exploring various options. I have already gotten my tonsils removed a couple months ago, but the sleep apnea symptoms persist.
My symptom is that I sleep fine for about 3-4 hours and then I wake up choking and with a rapid heart beat.
I was wondering if anyone has tried out the Thornton Adjustable Positioner (TAP) dental device. A year ago my previous dentist suggested I use a dental device known as TheraSnore. It set me back $360 and worked for only 2-3 months before my symptoms came back. Basically, it was a waste of money.
My dental insurance will not cover dental devices and neither will my medical insurance, and from what I hear, the TAP device costs between $700 to $1800. So this is going to burn a deep hole in my pocket book. But then again, if it is effective and rids me of sleep apnea, it'd be worth every penny of it. I just want to be as sure as possible and get feedback on those who have tried it (or know anyone that has) to find out if this may be good for me.
Any insight on the this device or any other oral device is appreciated.
