So I'm 22 and I've been having pretty bad sleep problems for the last 5 - 6 years and I'm at my wits end. I'm frustrated and feel like giving up, since I feel like I've looked into every possible cause of my sleep problems. I'd appreciate any advice!
Basically I sleep about 8 - 10 hours a night during the week and wake up feeling like I've slept 2. I'm exhausted through the day, irritable and frequently get down and depressed due to the poor quality of sleep. I was diagnosed a few years ago with moderate sleep apnea and was subsequently told to use a CPAP machine. I've used it for the last year or so, on and off with mixed results. It seems to work for a few weeks to a month and then my sleep problems arise again and I stop using the machine. I then sleep alright for a few weeks to a month or so, and then back to bad sleep again. It's a vicious cycle.
A lot of the time when I use the CPAP machine I wake up with a very dry mouth and nose (even though I use the humidifier) and tear it off with frustration.
I am very restless and sleep very lightly at night. My main problems seems to be the vivid, bad dreams that I experience every night. And I'm not exaggerating when I say every night. I always have dreams of catastrophic events or of people dying. Even if I feel relaxed and my mind is at ease before sleep, my brain switches on these crazy dreams every night.
I don't drink much coffee, (although I have lately, and my sleep has been considerably worse.. will quit now). I do drink a considerable amount on weekend nights, but none during the 5 weekday days. I'm currently using Avamys nasal spray and Prozac.
As for my health, I excercise very regularly, but unfortuantely due to my schedule I have to work out around 2-3 hours before I got to bed. I also eat very well, which has let me lose a lot of weight and become quite fit.
I'm frustrated because of my age and health, I feel like I shouldn't be suffering from these kind of sleep ailments already. If there is anything anyone can suggest or let me know to help it would be much appreciated!
Cheers
