The loss of a job can be devistating or it can be a blessing, but usually one does not know the full picture until you're several months down the road. I've been reading the posts and replies here and I was sorry to hear about the situation, as it appears to be all medical related to the sleep problem. If it helps, I can tell you with 100% certainty that no employer wants to or enjoys laying off or terminating an employee. They have money invested in you and it sets them back to find a replacement. Yet just about all employment is presumed to be 'at will', meaning you can leave them for any reason and take your experience and training to another employer, or, they can let you go if they want to move in a different direction. About the only exception is a job with an employment contract, but you have to get way up the ladder for that kind of arrangement. Sometimes the next best thing to an employment contract is finding and getting a job with large company that is unionized. Yet again, it is very difficult to find this kind of arrangement in today's economy. About FMLA, there is some wiggle room in this law that can favor the employer. It is often a law that works best if there is an event or an illness that has a beginning and an end date. With the sleep disorder going unresolved, I'm not sure that is the case here.
