Here's the secret about water - ANY water that sits or stands in a vessle, jug, or container for an extended period of time has an increasing risk of becoming incompatable for humans and bad for equipment - no matter if it was distilled or just tap water. The best policy: Change your humidifier water frequently with either tap or distilled. No one standard applies to using distilled or tap water in a PAP humidifier since mineral hardness is different from place to place. To say it is always better or safer to use distilled water isn't true if you have low hardness water in your town. You can buy distilled water in a plastic container and have it sit around in an opened jug for a while and it will get smelly on you. If you have decent tap water in house or apartment, use tap water and change it frequently - perhaps every other night if it isn't consumed by the heat.
