You don't give your age, but I assume you're a young man. I also understand that you have not had a sleep study, so all of what you've written is speculative, although you seem convinced that you have apnea. So, let's assume it's true. First, let me point out that what you see on this forum generally represents problems encountered by new users. Many, many of us on CPAP therapy have used the machine for years, use it every night, and think nothing at all of it. Our spouses still love us; our relatives and friends understand and may be curious. CPAP has become very common. A scout leader friend when on a camping experience, and three of the four leaders slept in a tent using CPAP machines.

The machines are small and very portable. Some are about half the size of a loaf of bread. Some masks cover the nose and mouth, but most cover only the nose. Read this forum, including the archived comments. Everything you need can be found here.

I can understand your apprehension about whipping out the machine during a sleepover with a girlfriend, but if you're sleeping with someone who loves you, it shouldn't be a very big deal. It sure beats snoring all night!

As for drinking so much that you have to sleep over....that's something most of us forego when we actually grow up. Binge drinking isn't really that great of an idea. If your "social and every day life" is that much more important than your health, then I would say you have a lot of growing up to do. When I encounter people who are this worked up over adapting to using a CPAP machine, I always think of our returning military men and women who are adjusting to artifical limbs or other major medical problems, or children in hospitals fighting, and sometimes losing, the battle with cancer. Everything is relative.
