My first inclination was to echo Captin Cannuck and skillsaw and point out that we should always use the machine. But, maybe we should talk about this a bit.
Does 4 hours of fragmented sleep using the CPAP machine (in this case) beat nine hours of solid sleep not using it? Could it be that chickweed has been misdiagnosed? Maybe he doesn't actually need his machine. Maybe the setting isn't correct. Maybe he needs a different style of mask. Maybe a pillow that works better with the mask.
In my case, there's no way I could sleep for any length of time without the CPAP machine, and I'm only at 10 cm of pressure. Without the machine, I would wake up over and over all night long. In the morning, my throat would be swollen and sore from snoring. My body tells me in no uncertain terms that I need the CPAP machine, and I actually enjoy the feeling of easy respiration that it provides when I put on the mask.
I think we should discuss chickweed's case a bit further. One night doesn't prove anything, but if CPAP therapy, in concert with his other disorders, is preventing a good night's sleep, where's the benefit? How does this balance out?
