Thank you for your thoughtful response. I should have prefaced my last post with the fact that I have already had three surgeries: septoplasty in 2001, UPPP with geniotubercle advancement in 2005 and MMA in 2006 (the last two with Dr. P at Stanford).
I was doing well for a while after the surgery but have since started medical school. I noticed I was having a brutal time getting up in the am and was dragging though the days--my concentration was definitely affected. I probably did put on a few pounds at the beginning of the year and have been really working hard to get my weight down. I am not obese according to BMI (around 28 at the moment) but am overweight by 10 pounds or so. Anyway, I went back to Ann Arbor and retested...sure enough there was enough apnea to warrant CPAP again.
Since I posted my initial message, I have done a couple things. First, I made an appointment with a dentist who specializes in making oral appliances for sleep apnea. I tried one a long time ago but it was bulky and uncomfortable--no relief. There are several models out now...I'm wondering if anybody has tried any of these with success?
I also picked up a new mask...it's one of the hybrid masks. For the first time in the 1000 or so nights I've used CPAP (I was on it before the surgeries for 3 years), the thing stayed on the whole night. That happened two nights in a row! Since then I haven't had quite the same outcome but I'm cautiously optimistic that I've found a winner.
Thanks again for your response.
