The increased relaxation you are getting by sleeping better could be resulting in increased reflux because the diaphragm relaxes and the esophageal sphincter is where the esophagus goes through the diaphragm. I used to have really bad GERD and this was the case for me, too.
You cannot get rid of GERD by taking pills. Proton pump inhibitors only work for a short time, then the body produces more proton pumps then you have to take more proton pump inhibitors. I finally quit this escalation when my doctor upped my dosage to two in the morning and two in the evening. I had the worse stomach acid you'll ever imagine for two weeks, fading to no problem in four weeks.
But along with this you MUST stop causing the GERD. Soda pop is the worst thing I can do for my GERD. Alcohold and Coffee are right behind that. Chocolate and ice cream just make my stomach erupt into the esophagus. Animal fats are a problem, too. You can, and should quit eating/drinking these things.
The lower esophagus will take a long time to heal after you stop the reflux. It takes real patience, but I'm here to tell you it can be whipped. Then you can consume some of these things in limited quantities. I only drink soda pop when we are on long road trips (twice a year). I can now drink coffee as long as I don't drink it every day. Tea is a very good substitute (and much healthier, too) if you need the caffeine. I can drink a glass or two of wine with my dinner, but anyone with sleep apnea should be avoiding alcohol after 5-6 PM, whether they have GERD or not.
Sorry to go on about GERD on a sleep forum, but you asked. :-)
