I have been a "squeaker" for years according to sleep partners. I have woken up a few times when I am doing it, if I am awoken from a deep sleep. It's like I hold my breath (lungs filled) and very slowly let the air out while constricting my throat (on purpose), resulting in a high-pitched squeaking sound.
I did a sleep study for this about 10 years ago, and I did not do it that night. I did however miss out on 2 - 3 full sleep cycles compared to normal people. My doctor told me that if I didn't do it every night, then it was not serious and wouldn't die, and that I would be fine. I think that he did not believe me, and I did not have anyone with me that could explain what I do.
About 5 years ago I was working nights at a hospital, and I was convinced again by a roommate to see somebody. I went to the top sleep specialist in the Twin Cities metro area, and he was completely concentrating on the fact that I worked nights (which is apparently a major area of study for him) at the end of the appointment, I just barely got out the issue of squeaking and he completely dismissed me. He told me I just need about 2 more hours of sleep than most people. So once again I gave up.
I have just been told by a psychologist that I really need to get it checked out again.
I am positive it is not obstructive since I didn't do it at the sleep study. Additionally, I have no tonsils or adenoids, and I had my lower jaw moved forward for an overbite at 16.
I am 31 now, female, average weight, and have no cardiac problems. I do have high blood pressure, and am currently on an Ace Inhibitor for that. I also do wake up with headaches and anxiety a lot.
Is it worth it to get checked out again? Has anyone heard of this? Can they even do anything for me, since it is central sleep apnea-ish rather than obstructive?
Any information or ideas would be lovely! Thank you for reading!
