What kind of battery is it and, did they say why he couldn't take it?
I'm an electrical engineer and I use a very expensive battery system that I developed for a different product when I don't have AC power. (It's like I'm cheating) Before I developed this system I was going to go to Radio Shack and buy enough 'D' size battery holders for 10 cells then connect them in series. I asked my CPAP manufacturer about using 15 volts and they said it was OK. If he uses 8 cells then he'll get 12 volts but the voltage will drop off. Alkaline 'D' cells have a lot of power and should last more than one night. Also, the paranoid people who told him he can't take his CPAP battery shouldn't have a problem with D cells.
Without knowing his exact system, I can't guarantee that this will work nor that it won't damage his system.
