My brain knows that I've stopped breathing, but I'm physically unable to move or start breathing again. For a couple of seconds, I'm completely awake but paralyzed and unable to resume breathing. I scream at myself to wake up inside my head over and over, and keep sending frantic messages to my body to breathe, until I jerk awake and take some breaths. It's so scary because I'm aware of it the whole time.
This ONLY happens when I'm sleeping on my back. Which is why I sleep on my stomach only. It's happened since I was a kid. Seeing as I try not to sleep on my back, it doesn't happen much -- only when I'm very tired and don't sleep on my stomach. I've never been overweight or obese. I have ADHD which I started stimulant medication for a few years ago, and has not affected this. Any ideas? Should I tell my doctor, or ask for a sleep study? I am wondering if it has affected the ADHD?
(Also... why the heck does it ONLY happen when I'm sleeping on my back?!!?!)
