Some posters have asked why REM sleep is all that important since no one seems to know exactly what happens during that sleep phase. I ran across this statement by Andrew Newberg, M.D.. "Deprive a rat, which normally lives about two years, of REM sleep and the poor thing will survive for about five weeks."
