Disrupted sleep is something you see with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA} in particular.
What you are describing my be central sleep apnea (CSA) which disturbs sleep with
usually less intensity and is not as common as OSA.If you are suffering from CSA CPAP will not help. A BiLevel machine in the timed mode
can help. When we are sleeping in non-REM sleep we are using our accessory muscles
around our neck and shoulders to help us breath along with our diaphragm. If you have
damaged the nerve leading to the diaphragm you will be able to breath during non-REM
sleep and breathing will stop when going into REM sleep and an arousal will occur. In
REM sleep all we have is our diaphragm to breath, the rest of our movement muscles are paralyzed which helps us not act out our dreams. A BiLevel machine will help you breath
when the diaphragm isn't moving.Let us know what they chose to treat you with.
Best wishes,
