Sleep Apnea?

Could this be sleep apnea or something else? I have had several episodes during the past 10 months that have me concerned that I may have sleep apnea or something else wrong. These episodes always occur when I am sleeping during the night and have even happened when I have fallen asleep in a recliner watching t.v. I wake up with sort of a gasping, which causes me to get up. When I get up, my heart is either really racing or skipping beats. It takes a few minutes before I feel well enough to go back to bed. A few times, I felt like I was going to pass out. I have a worthless dr. who doesn't like to refer me to see any one else and sometimes refuses to do testing. I don't go to the dr. very often because I don't want to deal with this women. I am trying to find another dr. I don't sleep well - I wake up many times during the night and always feel tired. If this is sleep apnea, can it cause a heart attack or stroke? Can a person just stop breathing and not start breathing again??? Sometimes I just want to take something to make me sleep well, but I'm afraid it might make this condition worse. Any advice? Shannon
