It sounds like it might be sleep apnea; waking up many times during the night is symptomatic of sleep apnea. Feel like you're dragging through your days and kinda lost the motivation to do much?
Yes, it has happened that a person stops breathing and doesn't start, but it's rare. It's far more common to have multiple wake episodes during the night. Sleeping pills are not a good idea.
Untreated sleep apnea usually leads to high blood pressure (Stroke), heart problems, gradual short term memory problems, gradual diminishing of problem-solving ability, feels like your brain is wrapped in cotton.
By all means, get another doctor and do it ASAP. It really sounds like you need a sleep study which is the only way to diagnose sleep apnea. Your health is way too important to try to deal with a doctor with whom you have no rapport. Good luck and keep us posted.
