Several of your symptoms sound like sleep apnea: waking up gasping, having your heart racing, waking up multiple times, and feeling tired during the day. I don't know about the difficulty in going back to bed; perhaps that is due to anxiety (which also be causing you to wake up, or which could be due to your apneas). If you do have sleep apnea, you are actually probably at least partially waking up many more times than you know. I thought I was waking up 4 or 5 times per night, and a sleep study showed 31 awakenings and 117 arousals.

If you have sleep apnea, a sleeping pill may make it worse (though it doesn't have to). However, my doctor had me try sleeping pills as a test, so that might be an alternative partial test your doctor could try, while a sleep study would be the real test.
