You will not suffocate; survival instinct will cause you to take off the mask or open your mouth to breathe. There is a reason you are a mouth breather and you identified it; you find it difficult to breathe through your nose. You may have enlarged tubinates -- spongy tissues in the nose. You may have allergies causing some swelling. The nasal passages are not large and it doesn't take much to make breathing uncomfortable. There can be many factors.

If you don't have a humidifier, get one. That might be all you need. If you do have a humidifier and you are still having problems, go back to the doctor to check out the allergies, turbinates, everything having to do with nasal health. You might need an ENT or otorrhinolaryngologist. If you mouth breathe during the night, you are defeating the CPAP, hence the headache.

I was a mouth breather for 40 years due to allergies and congestion. Amazingly enough, with the CPAP and humidifier, I have become a nose breather 24/7. I would never have believed it.

Good luck to you and keep us posted.
