Yes, there are many millions of people who have apnea who are not overweight. There are other factors that can produce sleep apnea other than weight. For example, the type of facial bones that you have, the dimentions of the airway, having a short thick neck, having an elongated uvuala, etc.

Your description of having the sense that you cannot breathe, then having a panic, followed by a calming down.... that's classic.

You should seek out PSG testing so that you can get diagnosed. Only then can treatment begin. There is good treatment available for OSA now. It may involve wearing a CPAP mask. In many people, OSA can be reversed. I highly recommend CPAP treatment.
