My understanding is that waking up with a racing heart can be a common symptom of sleep apnea; I had it until I started on CPAP, but rarely afterwards.

Sleep apnea does present long-term risks to the heart, but I believe that is only if it is untreated. The apnea events are stressful to the heart, but if you can control them then you remove the stress.

I get the impression (based on your doctor's comments) that you are not allowing enough time for sleep. I know that you feel pressed at law school, but don't you think you would accomplish more if you are rested? Having extra time to be awake does no good if you are too sleepy. I know that I sometimes push the margins, but at some point we all have to face that we have limits.

Many people find that losing weight lessens their apnea. I know that can be difficult, but it could make a big difference.

It sounds as if you are on the right path by seeing your sleep doctor. Maybe your doctor can adjust the titration rate to a better level, or perhaps use the Auto setting. Sometimes when the CPAP setting is high there is an increase in central sleep apnea; I don't know if that might be happening in your case.

Take care!
