Excellent Questions! On the second question, in no way does sleep apnea draw the kind of research money that, say, cancer does yet you can make the case that untreated sleep apnea can do a lot of damage with heart attacks, strokes, & destruction of lives in general - and should be thought of as a great danger - up there with some types of cancer. Go to the American Cancer Society website and look at all their research. There is the American Sleep Apnea Association, look there. Any research there? Funding - who funds the American Sleep Apnea Association - Oh, just the CPAP makers. Which leads to your first question - what is the progress of sleep apnea? That is really unknown I think, different from person to person. Certainly no money is being spent on collecting data as compared to cancer. It is well known, and my advice too that once a person is diagnosed with SA that they need to maintain good health and to keep an idea weight. Nope, not saying that weight is always responsible for SA in all cases - just that excess weight is NEVER an improvement for those with SA.
