This is just my laymen take,

I think studies are really not able to fully reveal the extend of apnea because they only measure failed breathing. They measure the staging but I don't know if the readers are factoring in abnormal staging as possibly a result of adaptation.

I think our brains adapt to being choked to death during sleep by adjusting the sleep stages where it occurs. That would certainly explain why your index is low, your staging is goofy, and you feel terrible.
