The Sandman Auto is made by Covidian, who purchased the line from Puritan Bennett/ GoodKnight. You are correct - it hasn't been out for that long in its new form. I don't own one, but own the predecessor - the P&B 420E. I'm fairly certain the internal s/w is the same. Anyways about the operating noise, its common among all APAP machines of each manufacturer to sound different or louder when used at higher perscriptions levels. So, one person may comment that their model is normal and quiet while someone with the exact same model who operates it at a higher pressure is unsatisfied with the operating noise. But, you could have a bad one, I don't know? I don't work in the industry - I'm just a experienced user. The Respironics PR System One Auto is said to be the quietest on the market now (heard on another forum) - but at an average price about $250 higher than the Sandman, there is some added expense in owning one.
