You mention not trusting the results of your recent sleep study which was done a Stanford. Stanford has one of the best reputations for accuracy in sleep studies so I wouldn't discount their findings.
Hypopneas can be as debilitating as OSA and in some cases cause more problems.
The daytime tiredness could be due to low O2 levels during the day.
I would think that if you didn't need CPAP your auto pressure level would never go above the minimum setting.
One thing you may want to talk to your sleep doc about is trying a BiLevel machine. If you have a low respiratory drive during the day you may have one while sleeping which could cause some difficulty with CPAP. Trying a bilevel machine in the timed mode would take the workload off respiration during sleep.
Just a thought and only my opinion. Without viewing your complete sleep study and knowing your complete medical history and understanding it, it's really difficult to make an accurate recommendation.
