I believe BiLevel (BiPAP), is the right choice for your wife. If she has shallow breathing during the night then the timed mode may be something to try. The timed mode is where the machine will act similar to a ventilation device and not depend on detecting a change in breathing pressure.

The negative side of the timed mode is the respiratory rate will be set by the physician. Some people have a problem with the timed mode so many docs usually start in the ST mode which is better tolerated. Docs will start with the machine in the times mode if there is a neurological problem which require the timed mode.

I'm not familiar with the new BiLevel machines. I know Respironics came out with the first BiLevel machine nearly 20 years ago and technology has changed since then. Maybe someone on the forum has tried some of the new machines and can give some feedback.
