Yes, that is preferred. However, if rainout is not an issue, it doesn't matter. My old CPAP went on an open lower shelf of the night table. The new one doesn't first there, so it's at the same level as my head. Rainout does not appear to be an issue.

I use the old CPAP at least one night per month to make sure I have a spare in working order.
