Posted by FtWorthMark on May 17, 2010 at 10:50:14:I was diagnosed in 2003 with sleep apnea and received a CPAP machine with the warning that I should always use it. NEVER sleep without it my doctor warned.
I requested a CPAP and was told I must have another test to prove I have sleep apnea for insurance to cover the machine. I told them during the first test I showed 60% blood oxygen and they almost took me to the ER. They insisted the test must be run anyway.
At the center I asked the technician to wake me and end the test if my blood oxygen got too low.
I was woken up several times during the study by alarms going off, but I was never told I had severe oxygen starved blood.
3 hours into the test I was woke up with paramedics in the room. I was told I had severe heart arrhythmia and needed to go to the hospital.
The ER doc suggested I not try to sleep without the machine as my first doctor instructed even for a CPAP test as he believed that caused the arrhythmia.
So, now I'm getting ER bills. I asked the sleep center, Apria, to pay these ER bills as they did not follow my instructions and wake me when problems started but only when the problems were so severe they had to call the paramedics.
Any opinions?
