I'm no expert on Medicare, but it is common for insurance companies to provide for replacing the machines periodically. Sometimes people end up with multiple working machines as a result. One reason for replacing a machine is the concern whether the old machine is sufficiently clean (this may depend on how well you take care of it), and another is whether the machine fails. For some people, a machine failure would be a critical problem, while for others it's not as big of a deal.
I suggest trying to find a rent-to-own program. There are a lot of CPAP suppliers (especially if you check on the Internet), with a range of prices and options. Hopefully you can find a plan that fits well with Medicare rates.
