Sometimes, when a sleep lab does not work well, doctors will send patients home with an automatic CPAP; those machines can provide a lot of information about a parient's sleeping and about what pressure levels will work. However, they don't provide all of the information that a sleep lab will provide.
I'm assuming that the sleep lab found that you were unable to sleep, rather than that being your own impression? When I first went to a sleep lab, I thought it took me 1.5 hours to fall asleep; actually, I fell asleep in 9 minutes. Sometimes our own estimates of our sleep aren't entirely accurate. Then we may get frustrated, which interferes further with our sleep.
