One of the things that lead me to get a sleep study was that I started waking up several times gasping for air after a "nightmare". I had never done that before. But I had suffered years of waking up at night and being very tired during the day, then I started developing all kinds of things like chronic fatigue syndromes, joint pain, acid reflux, inability to focus, headaches, diabetes, unexplained weight gain. Now they think all or part of these could be attributed to sleep deprivation. I just got my machine yesterday so last night was my first night on it. I woke up several times and had ingested a large amount of air so I was miserable most of the morning, but my brain is already working better! I complained for many years to several doctors that I snored and had trouble waking up at night all the time and all the other symptoms. No doctor ever recommended a sleep study. Here lately acouple of friends suggested a sleep study because I had some of the same health issues and symptoms as their husbands, and since my mother and brother are on a CPAP, I decided to try it. But I even had to "justify" it to my GP. Even after I brought it up he still did not connect the dots. I'm glad I persisted in trying to find out what was wrong with me. I suffered so many years. Wish I had done this many years ago. I feel like my children have missed out on having their real mom around.
