Some sleep doctors primarily look for sleep apnea and don't really look for the various other sleep disorders. I don't know if that is true in your case (you know how much individual attention you got), but you might need to find a different doctor. Especially since you do have at least mild sleep apnea, some doctors may have a hard time moving on from there.
Since you've tried CPAP and BIPAP for over a year, I assuming you accommodated to them fairly well. There is always something a little artificial and inconvenient about them; if you just have mild apnea, I can see how you might prefer not to use either. Still that may not be the best test. The real test is whether you are less tired when using them. You didn't see any difference in your tiredness when using them?
