I was in a similar situation as yourself several years ago. I'm currently 32 and had terrible insomnia starting in my teen years. It got progressively worse until I was unable to sleep for several days, would wake up after 4-5 hours of sleep and would be unable to fall asleep. 95% of insomnia cases are caused by sleep breathing disorders. My first sleep study at age 26 showed mild UARS, snoring and unexplained spontaneous arousals (over 100), basically nothing. I convinced the sleep tech lady to loan me a cpap and mask. I tried it out and felt better so I knew I had a sleep breathing problem. My 2nd sleep study 6 months later again showed nothing. I convinced my primary doc to prescribe cpap and mask which I bought off the internet. I had difficulty with it at first and would use sedatives. I gradually had to desensitize myself to it - it took me a year to get used to it. It was not unlike training for a marathon. Getting used to cpap was one of the most difficulty obstacles in my life!!! It's best if you sleep on your side with it so you should be fine. I too thought I'd never get used to it but it takes patience and preserverance - I am very anxious and am a light sleeper - once you start using it your nervous system will become less aroused so it will bother you less. I had my 3rd study done at Stanford which diagnosed me with surprise! OSA with an RDI of 14. They score respiratory events more aggressively which is why I was finally diagnosed there. I suspect your previous sleep studies did not pick up/aggressively score the respiratory events. You will be in good hands at Stanford.
