It has been a while since I heard this from my doctor, but I believe there are some risks associated with Auto CPAP; if I remember correctly, I believe it may increase the chances for central sleep apnea. That's not to say Auto CPAP is bad; I know many have benefited from it. But it is common for doctors not to overprescribe--i.e., to seek the minimum that will be successful rather than jumping to a higher level of treatment. I don't know your husband's doctor and his qualifications, but it doesn't seem wrong for him wanting to start with CPAP. Having said that, it makes sense to me to start with a machine that has both capabilities, though my insurance was pretty good about letting me turn in my old machine so I could switch to a different type of machine (with a heated tube).
