A common reason for yanking off the mask is nasal congestion. This sometimes comes to me around 4:30AM, although I don't pull off the mask, but just wake up.
There is no reason why you should not be able to sleep almost any position you want with a CPAP mask on. There is no requirement to sleep on your back exclusively. I sleep on my side and on my stomach all the time, and almost never on my back. Check out other postings and past forums for tips on how to adjust your mask properly.
