Posted by Nickle on November 11, 1999 at 22:54:33:I'm a 43 year old woman with muscular dystrophy which has affected my chest muscles. Two months ago I had a sleep study: woke 90 times, held my breath up to 90 seconds, usually stopped breathing during REM sleep and right as I initially fell asleep. I have to wear a full face mask because the muscles around my mouth are slack and the air blows out. Had a second study with Bi-PAP but kept startling awake as I fell asleep. Finally went hysterical around 4 am and they took the mask on. Inever achieved REM with the mask on.
Now I've been trying it at home for over 2 weeks, but couldn't sleep with the mask (and became an anxiety-ridden wreck) until my doc gave me 5 mgs of Ambien to get to sleep. I like the drug--don't feel groggy, and manage to sleep (between trips to the bathroom) 6 or 7 hours with the mask. Now, although I never had trouble falling asleep before, I'm afraid to sleep without the mask--can't do it. Can't wear the mask without the ambiem. Worry about becoming dependent on it (and the expense).
I still am waiting for wonderful dreams.
Any suggestions about how to handle my anxieties or about the Ambien?
