Concerned Parents

Posted by April M. on November 13, 1999 at 22:58:37:

I am the mother of a 9 year old boy. Mason had a "run-in " with a parked pickup truck 4 years ago and has never slept the same again. In March of this year, he had a UPPP, tonsilectomy and septoplasty. Tough recovery and 2 weeks later had his nose job mangled playing ball with my 24 year old brother.
Currently making plans to go back to the ENT who reccomended a sleep study.
What concerns us most is an extreme change in personality over the last few months. Mason, usually highly cooperative, reasonable, sensible, enthusiastic and easy to please, with a love of life we would all envy, has become argumentative, hostile, distant, unkind and downright impossible to please. I would use the word spoiled, but I don't think that happens in just a few months. ( I hope.... :)
My husband feels that the difficulty he has breathing (even during the day) is affecting him in a very direct way. He even breathes though his mouth during the day. My husband is convinced that this is having a substantial impact on his behavior and temperment, even to the point that his development and education are suffering. His breathing is audible 24/7 and labored to the point of sounding painful at night. He snores to the point of waking people in separate rooms of the house. His voice has a very nasal quality. I notice his inability to project his voice well at all during school when he reads aloud.
Not sure if this has any significance, but he has suddenly, for the first time in his life, become afraid of the dark and demands that a light be left on at all times. He wears nearly nothing at night to bed because he says it "makes him hot and he can't breathe when he is hot".
So.... are we crazy? Is there something in this that links Mason to apnea? I assume it would be obstructive. I would really appreciate some input. I would like to know what kind of improvement we can hope for our son. I would like to know what questions to ask. What tests to request and what to look for in the results. I need to know if I am on the right track. TIA

April
