Hi April,
First of all, I'm surprised the UPPP was done without a sleep study..typically it's done when one is diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea. I had the operation & wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy (& am worse now than before the operation). Anyhow, I am a 37 year old woman with a lifelong history of OSA (obstructive sleep apnea), and from how you've described your son, it sounds like he has the same. The irritability comes from not getting good sleep at night, for he's fighting all night to catch a breath. His fear of sleeping without a light is most likely due to the fact that he probably wakes himself up snoring, or some other sound, & it frightens him. And as far as him being hot at night..I experience the same thing..It could be freezing, but I'll keep waking up in a sweat..You see, his body, heart and lungs are working so hard to get air, that he overheats. Having OSA is physically very damanding & adversely affects every aspect of your life. I suggest talking to his doctor about a sleep study, where he will be monitored throughout the night, & they will determine the severity of the apnea. He will most likely have to sleep with a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine. And if he is overweight, he should diet..obesity is a major contributor to sleep apnea.

I empathize with you, and wish you the best.
