Ask your doctor to show you the results of your sleep study. My setting (10cm) was the time when I had the most REM sleep. When the tech pushed me into pressures above 12cm I started having CSAs. If you are having problems with the back pressure ask for a bi-PAP. If you think your pressure needs a wide range for your sleeping variations ask for a smart CPAP. I think you'll find that the doctor probably went low on your setting. If you're going to cut the prescription in half, why bother?
