No Mirage mask with AutoCPAP?

Posted by CherylB on February01, 2000 at 18:19:30:

I have an appointment at 10 am tomorrow to pick up my CPAP equipment at the DME. The resp. therapist says you can't use the Mirage Nasal Mask with any machine that varies the air pressure (BiPAP and AutoCPAP). The reason, she explained, is that the Mirage Mask uses some of the air from flow generator to inflate and seal the mask on your face. A variable pressure machine will cause it to leak with pressure changes. Have any of you used a Mirage Nasal Mask with BiPAP or AutoCPAP?

After long discussion, she convinced me that mask is more important than having AutoCPAP and since I want a Mirage, then I should get a Sullivan V. So my co-pay for Sullivan V, Mirage Mask and Respironics passive flow humidifier is $360 (20% of $1800). Some of the "advantages" of buying from the DME are:
They will assist me with use of the machine for the "life of the machine". They will provide a loaner if mine breaks down and has to be sent for repair. They offer periodic pressure checks, will assist in getting different masks at "cost". So $360 out of pocket isn't so bad. It would be $1300 out of pocket if I purchase "out of network" and then who knows how long I will have to wait to be reimbursed. So I'll probably come home tomorrow with Sullivan V, Mirage Mask, and passive humidifier. If the humidifier doesn't work out, they'll let me trade it in for F&P heated unit.
