Posted by Louise on February02, 2000 at 02:21:26:I had sinus surgery/septoplasty 12 days ago and noticed when I started to feel better, that my sense of taste and smell completely vanished!
When I could finally swallow painfree, I decided to treat myself with some good Lindt chocolate, but alas, I was totally disgusted with that bland wax in my mouth, so I went to sip some 7up, and thought, what's going on with these foods, they're all tasteless.
Then my husband came home with some very nice flowers, and I went to smell them and said, "That's funny. These are the most scentless flowers I've ever smelled." So my husband looked at me funny and said, "What are you talking about? They're so fragrent!"
Thenit hit me... I could not smell, therefore I could not taste.
I called the ENT and was told to relax, that it would take about 2 months before I regain full perceptual ability to smell and taste again.
Periodically I can taste things, smell things, and it's really a divine gift.
From what I've read up on Ansomia is that it usually happens to the elderly and causes depression as a result of not being able to enjoy food and aromas, especially in social situations.
Have any of you temporarily lost your scent/taste sense?
Thanks,
Louise
