Hi,
I've been seen by both the ENT and an oral surgeon. I at first thought it would be great to have surgery so I could cure this quickly. I did well on cpap for only a short time, then had trouble. I learned later I should have tried some other things with the cpap first. But, the oral surgeon fitted me for an oral appliance which seemed to work at first also. Then I kept getting the same problems ( putting on weight, constantly tired, irritable). I had my thyroid checked and reflux checked. All these are important because they can lead to sleep apnea. But, after cracking my tooth on the oral appliance and feeling stressed I read the forum and decided to try the cpap and learned my mask needed to change. I now have the full face mask and had the setting changed and feel better. Sorry to go on so long, but as you've probably read the surgeries work sometimes but not on all. It's major surgery and a risk. As my doctor said, it is best to try the other methods first. Also, insurance is more likely to pay if the other methods are tried. The oral surgeon said if the appliance works then I would have been a better candidate for the surgury since it does the same thing (I am glad I didn't get it, since it doesn't seem to be successful). It could be that he has such a recessed chin that they think this would help, but make sure and followup with someone who knows about OSA....sue
