I personally would give c-pap a try before considering surgery. Unfortunately, most surgeries
do not have a high success rate, except for tracheostomy which is used only for the most severe cases.I would call your insurance company and ask them how they cover for a c-pap and/or bi-pap machine. Some will only rent, some will buy and my insurance rents for ninety days and then it converts to a purchase if I am still willing to use it. It would be best to know this before the second sleep study.
I think a lot of men with beards and moustaches opt for either the nasal pillows (aka adams circuit) or a full face mask.
It probably would pay to shop around for the machine but a lot of insurances have preferred providers and will only let you use these. This is another thing you need to ask the insurance company. The costs vary from basic models to the high tech that allow you to download information from them about your apnea episodes ect. I just bought a (basic) Sullivan V c-pap, Humidaire heated humidifier, and a Mirage mask and it came with a carrying case for about $1,000.
I believe the number of follow up studies probably vary from doctor to doctor. My sleep lab told me I would only need to come back if I had problems but others here say they go back in six months and then once a year or so.
The best advice I can give to you Amy is to be encouraging to you husband. It can be frustrating to deal with sleep apnea, c-pap, doctors, sleep studies, insurance, bosses ect. But I can already see you are very supportive already. You came here and found all of us. :)
Come back anytime and ask questions.Savannah
