Hi Jeff,
I'm thinking we could get some really good debates going over your situation. Mental control of physical function, and awareness of sleep/awake situations seem to be areas of disagreement. Although I can appreciate both sides of the argument, I am not going to address that aspect of things.
I think the most important concern is to find a solution that you can be comfortable with, which will make it easier to comply with any therapy that may be prescribed.
In a past forum there was a discussion of autopaps in which it was said that one of the machines on the market can detect central apneas.
Two of the regulars, Mile High Airman and Perry have done a lot of research on these machines, and would perhaps know which, if any, does detect central's.
If they, or someone else can let us know, then you can do some further research including talking to the manufacturer, and perhaps end up getting your doctor to prescribe a trial with this machine which would probably solve the riddle.
Jeff, I also find that slow, deep, controlled breathing can be relaxing, and ease me through difficult situations. Not as slow as yours, or for as long a period of time, but enough so that I can understand how it got you in trouble.
Hope we can help you to a viable solution, please let us know.
RenoTom
