I definately feel for you SS. I had at times severe depression for years before CPAP. Although I have only been on it for 6 weeks, I do think it is improving my life. It just does it in little ways, day by day. When I do have a bad night with CPAP I feel like crying and dying. If it is o.k. I feel like laughing. I think it just takes time and patience, which is extremely had to do when you are sleep/oxygen deprived. I have found this forum and the people on it to be extremely supportive and helpful. When I get depressed I come here and listen to peoples trials and tribulations with the almighty xPAP. You can begin to identify what are major issues with yourself and xPAP and think 'hey, I don't have that problem' and problems you do have you can definately find answers for. I almost don't rely on my doc for anything regarding this at all, he has enough faith in my 'research' that he will go along with anything I want to try (I guess I am lucky). Even if you don't have a supportive doc, I would take much stock in people you have been there with CPAP for years. I just don't have much faith in the DME's or others when they don't take you seriously - it hurts.
