Somnoplasty Effective for Snoring?

Posted by Sven on February03, 2000 at 12:14:01:

I am scheduled to undergo somnoplasty as a snoring treatment (due to a large soft palette). I have no sleep disorders or problems, it's only for marital preservation. Is there any real data on the long-term effectiveness of this procedure (i.e., does it work, and if so, how long does it take after treatment), or can any readers at least provide some reliable anecdotal information? I have scanned the postings and have found various descriptions of after-effects (some not so pleasant) but no apparent answers to the question: Does it work? In what percentage of patients? These answers are important because it's expensive ($2,000), not covered by insurance, and seems to come with no guarantees. I want to trust the doctor, but I also want to be sure it's not a surgical fad. Thanks for any replies.
