Today's mail brought the latest copy of AARP's Bulletin (Amer. Assoc. of Retired People, for you young ones who have not reached 50 yet so haven't been invited to join) and in it was a study that showed the average time a doctor listens to the patient's "opening statement" was 23 seconds before he or she changed the subject or redirected the talk!!!! It stressed that you must not only talk fast, but compellingly, and knowledgeably to make the doctor know what's bothering you, because apparently often they never do grasp it. This can result in poor treatment and mistakes. This forum has certainly bemoaned this problem, we knew it was bad, but it is still shocking to see a researched number and the consequences of it in print.
