Regarding steps to follow before surgery, I found that to be an easy decision: my MD advised me that surgery is effective in about 50% of cases with my mild/moderte apnea. I just wasn't willing to go that far with only a 50/50 shot. (Again, that is my MD's opinion.)

If you do suspect apnea, I would follow the other advice and get an appointment with an MD associated with a sleep disorders center. During your evaluation visit, the doctor will go through several scenarios, and determine if you are a candidate for sleep study. Once the overnight study is complete, you will have a much clearer idea of what the problem is - and what the best treatment may be. Treatment options for Apnea, as laid out for me were 1)CPAP therapy 2)Dental appliance 3)Surgery.

I was lucky - CPAP is doing the trick for me, I've been using it for almost 2 years now.

Best of luck as you travel the sleepy maze .....
