RLS is a disorder of the waking state, usually occuring when a person is trying to fall asleep. A feeling, described alternately as a tingling, crawling, or electric, causes one to have to move their legs; sometimes they have to get up and walk around before it goes away, although it may return when theuy are at rest again. I had this problem post-operatively a few years ago. Lasted about 2 weeks; very strange. On the other hand, PLMS (periodic limb movement disorder) is a spontaneous moving of the legs or arms during the night. Certain medications may improve the problem. An interesting point: PLMS may not actually be a disorder, but a response to sub-clinical upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS). Newer flow detection techniques, which are able to pinpoint very small changes in airflow, have led to a theory that a lot of PLMS may be a reaction to event-generating arousals. These improved flow sensors may even change the way we currently quantify mild, moderate, and severe OSA.
